The Celiac Friendly Map
This map is a curated list of restaurants which attempts to find every place that can accommodate an individual with Celiac Disease. This map is always a work-in-progress, and it is always being updated. Due to the methodology we use, it is a slow process adding new areas. Please be patient as we add more, and use the contact us e-mail below if you are hoping to have the map expand to your area.
The standard for this list is that you should be able to get at least a couple of substantial items on the menu prepared in a way that is safe for consumption for someone with Celiac Disease. Not every restaurant on this list is a dedicated gluten-free facility, and you should always notify any restaurant of your allergy. If you find any restaurant on this map which in your experience has not met this standard, has changed their food-handling procedures, has closed down, or if you find a restaurant which is safe but not on this list, please use the contact us link below to notify us.
This map was initially created for restaurants in Seattle, Washington through Google Maps. One of my friends was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and could not find anywhere to eat. I attempted to gather together as many safe places for her to eat as possible, but found keeping the list was unruly, and it was difficult to find what was in our area at any given time. I created a map on Google which would track these locations and save them on an on-going basis, and would be able to be accessed anywhere on our phones to find what is around.
The current methodology for identifying these locations:
Aggregated reviews from multiple online review websites are collected queried for terms related to "Celiac Disease", "allergy", "cross-contamination", "gluten", and other key words. The reviews which contain one or more of these key words is reviewed for sentiment and whether or not the poster became sick. This data is assessed alongside all other reviews for the restaurant, and we look for strong to overwhelming consensus.
If the restaurant has reviews indicating it is likely safe for an individual with Celiac Disease or gluten allergy, we contact the restaurant personally. Every single restaurant or chain on this map has been called to ask about their food handling processes for individuals with allergies, and in particular Celiac Disease or gluten allergies. If the restaurant self-identifies as unsafe, or if some procedure is found to be unsafe or raises an exceptional risk for cross-contamination to the point where they are unable to provide at least two substantial dishes, they are not added to the map.
Early on in this map's creation, my friend with Celiac Disease who now helps me with this map, would go and eat at each and every restaurant. As the map has expanded, it has become less feasible. We still attempt to eat at every restaurant whenever possible, and more than half of the restaurants on this list have been tried at least once with no issue.
No restaurant has sponsored or paid to be included on this map, and no money or other payment has ever been provided to be added to this map. We strive to make this as independent as possible. This map is not-for-profit, and no money is expected or will be accepted for use of it.
